Ratings
Student - S1
Requirements:
- Successful completion of the first half of the National Training Unit(NTU) Course, up to and including a pass mark for the S1 exam (E.3)
- Basic ATC abilities at Clearance and Ground
- Basic knowledge of Radar Client software
- Student's may control ground at the NTU Training Airport, CYXU - London, ON
Student - S2
Requirements:
- Advanced knowledge Radar Client Software
- Advanced ATC abilities at Clearance and Ground
- Demonstrated knowledge of Tower procedures
Promotion to S2 occurs upon completion of the NTU training course and subsequent Graduation. The S2 student may control tower positions at CYXU - London and, upon completion of local orientation, at minor airports within their home FIR's.
Senior Student - S3
Requirements:
- Advanced ATC abilities at Clearance, Ground and Tower
- Basic Knowledge of Terminal, Departures and Arrivals
- Advanced knowledge of Radar Client software
Senior students have all the privileges of Students. As well they can control a terminal, departures or arrivals position in their home FIR under the supervision of certification of a FIR instructor
Controller - C1
Requirements:
- Advanced ATC abilities at Clearance, Ground and Tower
- Advanced Knowledge of Terminal, Departures and Arrivals
- ATC abilities at Centre
- Knowledge of all positions within home FIR
Controllers may control any airport within their home FIR, with supervision or certification of a FIR instructor.
Senior Controller - C3
This rating is reserved for real-world and VATCAN controllers who have demonstrated excellent abilities at all positions under heavy traffic conditions. Nominations for promotion to Senior Controller must be made by the controller's FIR Chief. Promotion to Senior Controller requires approval from the VATCAN Director of Training.
Mentor
A Mentor is assigned by the FIR Chief Instructor, based on an apparent apptitude for teaching and a demonstrated desire to help fellow Students.
Under the Supervision of an Instructor, a Mentor works with Students for ATC positions up to and including Tower
Senior Mentor
Assignment to Senior Mentor is based on demonstrated growth as a Mentor and increased experience and knowledge as a Student Controller.
Under the Supervision of an Instructor, a Senior Mentor instructs Students and Mentors for ATC Positions up to and including Terminal
Instructor - I1
Assignment to Instructor is reserved for VATCAN Senior Mentors holding at least a Controller rating, who have demonstrated strong interpersonal teaching abilities, and are who are willing to continue actively teaching other VATCAN controllers. Nominations for appointment to Instructor must be made by the controller's FIR Chief. Appointment to Instructor requires approval from the VATCAN Director of Training.
Senior Instructor - I3
Assignment to Senior Instructor is reserved for real-world controllers and Instructors who have demonstrated strong interpersonal teaching abilities and are willing to actively teach other VATCAN controllers. Senior Instructors may be given assignments outside of their home FIR at the discretion of the Director of Training.
Nominations for appointment to Senior Instructor must be made by the controller's FIR Chief. Appointment to Senior Instructor requires approval from the VATCAN Director of Training.
